The New Generic Top-Level Domains (gTLDs) Are Here

The internet has gone through quite a few changes in the past few years:

1. Social Networks have become a stable position for small businesses to both market and create a web presence.

2. Responsive design has refocused web creators’ and owners’ attention back to what the internet is all about: content.

3.  The device-of-choice is shifting from PC to Mobile.

4. And now the “dot com” domain space has some new competition.

With the introduction of the new Generic Top-Level Domains (gTLDs), by ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers), you as a site owner can choose a domain that fits your company’s goals more accurately.

Unlike other gTLD releases (i.e. .org, .net, .info) the new gTLDs have meaning beyond an abbreviation or your business structure.

Here is a short list of some of the new gTLDs that have been or will be released soon:

There are over 1300 gTLDs that are planned to be released in the next couple of years. Out of the 1300 there will be a few hundred that will be popular and useful to the average business owner.

With these new domains you will be able brand yourself “categorically”, rather than with the ubiquitous “.com”.  A limited list of gTLDs will no longer dictate the design and marketing direction of your company. It will be the other way around – just as it should be.

For example, we recently registered a new domain name for ourselves using a new gTLD. It provides a distinctive look in the URL bar. Here’s what it looks like:

umbrella.graphics

We plan to keep umbrellagraphics.com for the time being; but over the next year or so we will begin branding ourselves with the new domain name. It’s a small change, but it can make a huge impression.
